Jewish history is a very long story that began in the ancient Levant. This area is a part of the Fertile Crescent near the Mediterranean Sea.

The people lived in a land known as Canaan. This land was a meeting place for many different cultures.

Early archaeological finds show that the Israelites likely shared much culture with the Canaanites. They spoke an old form of Hebrew called Biblical Hebrew. The Merneptah Stele is one of the earliest records of the name Israel.

Jewish tradition tells of many important people from the start. Abraham is often seen as the first Jew. His son was Isaac, and his grandson was Jacob.

After wrestling with an angel, Jacob was given the new name Israel. His descendants became the Twelve Tribes of Israel. These tribes eventually formed two kingdoms named Israel and Judah. In 586 BCE, the Neo-Babylonian Empire conquered the Kingdom of Judah. This event sent many people away from their homes. This movement of people is known as the diaspora.

Even when people lived far from their land, they kept their traditions alive. They wrote down important religious texts like the Mishnah and the Talmud.

These books helped keep their culture strong in new places. Over many centuries, Jewish communities grew in different areas. They became known by names based on where they lived. The Ashkenazim lived in Central and Eastern Europe. The Sephardim lived in places like Iberia. The Mizrahim lived in the Middle East and North Africa.

These groups helped the Jewish culture continue through many changes.

History was often difficult for Jewish people due to many wars and unfair laws. In 1492, Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand II forced Jews to leave Spain. Many people then moved to the Ottoman Empire or Italy. Between the 12th and 15th centuries, many Ashkenazi Jews faced hard times in Central Europe. This caused them to move toward Poland.

In the 1800s, many Jews in Europe faced even more hard times. This led many to move to the United States. Others began the Zionist movement in 1897 to seek a home in Palestine. This movement wanted to re-establish a Jewish state.

The 20th century brought very dark and serious times. In 1933, the Nazi Party rose to power in Germany. This led to the Holocaust, a period of terrible violence and loss.

About six million Jews were murdered during this time. Many people fled Europe to escape this danger. On May 14, 1948, the State of Israel was created. David Ben-Gurion declared it a new, democratic state.

Today, Israel is a place where many Jews live. The largest Jewish community outside of Israel is in the United States. Many other communities live in countries like France and Canada.
