The Maccabean Revolt was a major Jewish rebellion against the Seleucid Empire. This powerful empire ruled over the land of Judea. The revolt began because the Greek rulers tried to change Jewish life. They wanted the people to follow Greek customs instead of their own. This struggle lasted for many years. The main fighting happened between 167 and 160 BCE. However, the conflict did not truly end until 134 BCE. Eventually, the Jewish people gained their independence.

The trouble started when King Antiochus IV Epiphanes issued new laws. He banned many Jewish religious practices. He even placed the Second Temple in Jerusalem under Greek control. The king made the temple a site for Greek-style worship. This was very upsetting to the Jewish people. The king also forced people to break their dietary laws. He even required them to work on the Sabbath. These actions triggered a massive revolt against his rule.

A priest named Mattathias started the uprising in 167 BCE. He lived in a place called Modein. Mattathias refused to worship Greek gods at a new altar. He fought back against the Greek officers and fled to the mountains. After he died, his son Judas Maccabeus took over the leadership. Judas led a group of fighters known as the Maccabees. Their name might come from a word meaning hammer. They used fast moves to attack the Greek officials in the countryside.

The Maccabees won many important victories during the war. In 164 BCE, they successfully captured the city of Jerusalem. They cleaned the Second Temple to make it holy again. This special event happened on the date 25 Kislev. Today, this event is why people celebrate the festival of Hanukkah.

Even after this victory, the fighting continued. Judas died in the Battle of Elasa in 160 BCE. His brother Jonathan Apphus kept the resistance going from the mountains.

The revolt changed the history of the region forever. After years of struggle, Simon Thassi took control in 141 BCE. He drove the Greeks out of their stronghold in Jerusalem. This helped create the independent Hasmonean state. The Hasmonean dynasty ruled this new land for a time. An alliance with the Roman Republic helped keep them free. This story shows how people fought to keep their traditions alive.
