Time is the way everything moves from the past into the future.

It is a continuous progression that never stops or goes backward. Time helps us sequence events and compare how long they last. Scientists often call time a fourth dimension. It works together with the three dimensions of space. This link is called spacetime.

In modern physics, time can actually change speed. This happens near huge objects like black holes or at very high speeds. This idea is part of a theory called general relativity.

We use different tools to measure time depending on the length we need.

For short periods, we use clocks to see the passing moments. For long periods, we use calendars to organize days and months. A calendar is a mathematical tool used on Earth. A clock is a physical machine that shows time passing. Together, they help us mark a specific moment from a starting point. We can measure time from the shortest Planck time to billions of years. Scientists believe measurable time began with the Big Bang 13.8 billion years ago.

People have studied time for a very long time.

Ancient Egyptians used sundials to track the sun's movement. They used a system based on the number 12. They even used tools shaped like a T-square to track shadows. In ancient Greece, Plato is said to have made a water clock. This clock used water to make a whistling sound as an alarm. Later, in the 11th century, Chinese inventors made mechanical clocks. These used a special part called an escapement to keep time.

History shows many different ways to track the passing days.

Many years ago, people used the moon to make lunar calendars. These calendars had 12 or 13 months. The Maya civilization also made very complex calendars. They used the Haab' calendar with 18 months and 20 days each. In 45 BC, Julius Caesar helped create a solar calendar. Later, Pope Gregory XIII introduced the Gregorian calendar in 1582. This is the calendar most people use around the world today.

Today, we have the most accurate tools ever made.

These are called atomic clocks. They are much more precise than any old clock. They work by measuring the vibrations of atoms. Most modern clocks use the element caesium to do this. An atomic clock can stay accurate for millions of years. This helps keep all our different systems in sync. It is a huge step up from using sand or water.
