X-ray

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

X-rays are a powerful form of high-energy electromagnetic radiation. This means they are a type of energy that travels in waves.

These waves have a very short wavelength. They are shorter than ultraviolet rays but longer than gamma rays. Their wavelengths range from 10 nanometers to 10 picometers. This creates very high frequencies between 30 petahertz and 30 exahertz. Because they have such high energy, they can do many things.

These rays work by passing through many solid objects. They can travel through construction materials and living tissue.

This happens because the energy is strong enough to penetrate soft parts. In a hospital, doctors use X-ray radiography to see inside the body. This helps them check for broken bones. They can also use them to find objects hidden in tissue. Scientists also use them to find weak points in buildings. They can even identify certain chemical elements in materials.

Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen discovered these rays in 1895. He was a German physics professor.

He was studying cathode rays using special glass tubes. He noticed a faint green glow on a screen nearby. He realized invisible rays were passing through black cardboard to reach it. He named them "X" because the rays were unknown.

He even took the first X-ray of a human hand. It was a picture of his wife's hand. This discovery earned him the first Nobel Prize in Physics.

Many people worked to improve X-ray tools after the discovery. Thomas Edison helped make the first mass-produced live imaging device.

He called his device a fluoroscope. It used a substance called calcium tungstate to help see images. Another scientist, Mihajlo Pupin, found that these screens made X-rays work faster. Instead of taking an hour, imaging could take just a few minutes. In 1896, John Hall-Edwards used X-rays in a surgical operation for the first time.

We must use X-rays very carefully because they can be hazardous. They are a type of ionizing radiation. This means the energy is strong enough to cause DNA damage.

Too much exposure can cause cancer or radiation sickness. It can even cause skin burns. Because of these risks, public health authorities strictly control how they are used. This keeps people safe while doctors use them to help us heal.
