Players start with an equal number of pieces to keep things fair. Everyone puts one piece into a center pot to begin the fun.

To play, you spin the top and see which letter faces up.

The four Hebrew letters act as a guide for the rules. If the letter nun faces up, you get nothing. If gimel faces up, you take the entire pot. If hei faces up, you take half of the pieces. If shin faces up, you must put one piece into the pot. Some people even add three pieces for the letter shin. These letters help players remember exactly what to do on their turn.

History tells us the dreidel likely came from an older toy.

This toy was called a teetotum and was found in Europe. It may have started from ancient Greek or Roman tops. Some stories say Jewish people used dreidels to hide their studying. They might have swapped their holy books for tops to stay safe. This helped them keep their traditions alive during hard times. The name dreidel comes from a Yiddish word meaning "to turn."

There are many interesting facts about these spinning tops.

In Israel, many tops use the letter pe instead of shin. This changes the meaning to say a miracle happened "here." In 2022, people even made five-sided dreidels to include both ideas. Some people even take the game to space!

In North America, Major League Dreidel holds spinning contests. They even have a special stadium called a Spinagogue. Winners are judged by how long they can keep the top spinning.

People collect dreidels just like they collect stamps or coins.

You can find them made of wood, silver, brass, or lead. Some are very rare, like those made of black iron from Cochin. One famous dreidel was even worth $70,000 in 2019!
