These walls were first built by Herod the Great to expand the Second Temple. Now, the area is a major center for many people around the world.

Inside the walls, you will find two very important buildings. One is the al-Aqsa Mosque, also called the Qibli Mosque.

The entire compound is known as al-Aqsa. It covers a huge area of 144,000 square meters. The large courtyard can hold more than 400,000 worshippers at one time.

Jewish history at this site goes back a very long time. According to tradition, King Solomon built the first Temple in 957 BCE.

This Temple was destroyed in 587 BCE during a siege. Later, a Second Temple was built under Zerubbabel in 516 BCE.

King Herod later worked to renovate this second Temple. It was eventually destroyed by the Roman Empire in 70 CE. Many Orthodox Jews believe a third Temple will one day be built here. Because the site is so holy, many Jews face it while they pray.

For Muslims, the site is often called the Noble Sanctuary.

The area includes many historical monuments from different times. Since the Crusades, the Jerusalem Waqf has helped manage the site. The site has changed hands many times throughout history. From 1948 to 1967, Jordan controlled this part of Jerusalem. Since the Six-Day War in 1967, Israel has had security control here.

Because so many people care about this hill, it is a very sensitive place.

Different groups use different names for the site. Muslims may call it al-Haram al-Sharif, while Jews call it Har HaBeit. There are also rules about who can visit and pray there. For example, non-Muslims are not allowed to pray on the Mount. These different views and rules make the site a focal point of many discussions. It remains a place where people continue to wonder and reflect on their faith.
