Many scholars believe this book was written in Hebrew. It likely comes from the Persian period between 550 and 330 BCE. Some experts think the book is a work of historical fiction. Other scholars, including evangelical scholars, believe it is a historical narrative. They see it as a real story written in a short story style. This story is important because it connects many people to history.

Ruth's journey began during a time of famine in Israel. A man named Elimelech moved his family from Bethlehem to Moab. He lived there with his wife, Naomi, and two sons. The sons married Moabite women named Ruth and Orpah. After about ten years, the men in the family died. Naomi decided to return to her home in Judah. She asked her daughters-in-law to stay in Moab to find new husbands. Orpah chose to leave, but Ruth stayed with Naomi.

Ruth famously promised to stay with Naomi and follow her God.

When they arrived in Bethlehem, it was the barley harvest. Ruth went to work in the fields to find food. She practiced a job called gleaning, which means picking up leftover grain. A wealthy man named Boaz owned these fields. Boaz noticed Ruth and learned about her loyalty to Naomi. He was very kind to her and protected her. He even told his workers to leave extra grain for her.

Ruth worked in his fields through the barley and wheat harvests.

Later, Ruth and Naomi worked to secure a future for their family. Naomi gave Ruth advice about visiting Boaz at the threshing floor. Ruth followed this advice to ask for his protection. In those days, a close relative had special duties to help. Boaz spoke with another relative at the town gates about the land. This other man did not want to help, so Boaz stepped in. Boaz redeemed the land and married Ruth. They had a son named Obed.
