She appears in both Mesopotamian and Jewish stories. Many people describe her as a female demon of the night. Some scholars think her name might refer to a night bird. Others believe her name comes from ancient spirits called lilû. These spirits were part of the religion in Sumer, Assyria, and Babylonia.

Because she is from such old stories, her meaning is still debated today.

In Jewish folklore, Lilith has a very specific role.

Some legends say she was the first wife of Adam. These stories say she was made from the same clay as he was. Lilith reportedly left the Garden of Eden because she did not want to be subservient. She chose to leave rather than be under Adam's control. Some writings say she later stayed away after meeting the archangel Samael. These stories became very popular during the Middle Ages.

Different cultures had different ideas about these types of spirits.

In Mesopotamia, the lilû were spirits of adolescents who died young. Some people also connect Lilith to a demon named Lamashtu. Lamashtu was another figure with similar traits in ancient myths. In the Hebrew Bible, the word for Lilith appears only once. It is found in a list of creatures in the Book of Isaiah. Some people think this list refers to animals like screech owls.

People in the past often used special items to stay safe.

They used amulets and incantation bowls to ward off harm. Some of these amulets were like symbolic divorce papers. They were meant to stop a spirit from haunting a family. In some old texts, people even feared her presence at night. They suggested that men should not sleep alone in a house. They believed a person might be seized by Lilith if they were alone.

Today, experts use many tools to study these old ideas.

They look at ancient clay tablets and stone carvings. Some researchers study the way names were used in the Akkadian language. Others look at the Great Isaiah Scroll found at Qumran. These different clues help us understand how ancient people viewed the world. While we do not have all the answers, these stories tell us much about ancient beliefs. We can still see how these myths have shaped art and literature for a long time.
