Jeremiah was a major prophet in the Hebrew Bible.

He lived in the Kingdom of Judah during a very difficult time. His work lasted for more than fifty years. He began his ministry around 626 BC. This was during the reign of King Josiah. He lived through the reigns of five different kings. These kings were Josiah, Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim, Jehoiachin, and Zedekiah. Jeremiah was born into a family of priests. His father was a priest named Hilkiah. He came from the village of Anathoth in the land of Benjamin.

Jeremiah's job was to deliver messages from God to the people. He warned them about social injustice and moral decay. He also spoke about the worship of idols like Baal. Jeremiah believed the people had broken their covenant with God. He told them that Jerusalem would face a siege. He also predicted the Babylonian captivity. Because he often spoke of sadness and suffering, people call him the "weeping prophet."

He used many ways to teach his message. He used oracles, songs of lamentation, and even symbolic acts.

Not everyone wanted to hear Jeremiah's warnings. Many people in his own community plotted against him. A temple official named Pashur once beat him. Pashur also put Jeremiah in the stocks at the Upper Gate of Benjamin. Later, officials tried to kill him by throwing him into a cistern. This was a deep pit filled with mud. They hoped he would die from starvation. An Ethiopian man named Ebed-Melech rescued him from the mud.

Even when he felt afraid, Jeremiah said the word of God burned in his heart.

Jeremiah did not work alone in his writing. He had a scribe and disciple named Baruch ben Neriah.

Many believe Jeremiah and Baruch wrote the Book of Jeremiah. They are also linked to the Books of Kings and the Book of Lamentations. Some scholars think the books were put together in stages. These stages happened between 550 BC and 520 BC. Archaeologists have found items that might connect to his story. For example, seals were found in the city of David. These seals belong to men named Jehucal and Gedaliah. These names are also mentioned in the books of Jeremiah.

Today, Jeremiah remains a very important figure for many people. He is respected in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. In Judaism, his words are read in synagogues during the haftara. In Christianity, the New Testament quotes his words many times. The Gospel of Matthew shows how Jesus fulfilled his prophecies. In Islamic tradition, his story is also told. He is seen as a man who stayed faithful through great hardship. His life shows the deep connection between people and their faith.
