Elisha was a prominent Israelite prophet and wonder-worker in the ancient Kingdom of Israel. His name, which means "God is my salvation," is recognized across several major traditions. He is venerated as a prophet in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The Bahá'í Faith also refers to him by name in its writings. Scholars study the Elisha narratives to understand the folk religion of the Kingdom of Israel. These stories are primarily found in the Hebrew Bible, specifically within the Books of Kings.

Elisha's career began through a specific process of anointing and succession. He was the son of Shaphat, a wealthy landowner from Abel-meholah. The story begins when Elijah received a command from Yahweh to anoint Elisha as his successor. Elijah found Elisha ploughing a field with twelve yokes of oxen. To invest him with the prophetic office, Elijah threw his mantle, or cloak, over Elisha's shoulders. Elisha then served as Elijah's close attendant until Elijah was taken up to heaven in a whirlwind.

During this transition, Elisha made a request for a "double portion" of Elijah's spirit. Historians and scholars offer different interpretations of this request. Some believe it was an allusion to ancient property inheritance customs. In those customs, the oldest son received twice as much as younger sons to show he was the rightful heir. Other thinkers suggest the request was for greater prophetic power than Elijah possessed. This interpretation is supported by the fact that Elisha is described as performing twice as many miracles as his teacher.

Elisha's ministry was characterized by numerous miracles that addressed both physical and social needs. He purified an unwholesome spring in Jericho to make the water drinkable for the people. He helped a widow by multiplying her small amount of oil so she could pay her debts. In one account, he changed poisonous gourds into wholesome food to feed the sons of the prophets during a famine. He also fed one hundred men using only twenty loaves of new barley. These acts demonstrate a wide range of interventions in the lives of ordinary people.

One of the most significant accounts involves Naaman, a Syrian military commander. Naaman suffered from leprosy, a skin disease that affects the body. Elisha instructed Naaman to wash in the River Jordan seven times. After following these instructions, Naaman's flesh was restored to be like that of a child. This miracle led Naaman to believe there was no other God in the earth except in Israel. This specific event is also mentioned in the New Testament in the Gospel of Luke.

Elisha also performed miracles related to life and death. He helped a woman from Shunem by securing the birth of a son. When that child later died, Elisha successfully resuscitated him. Even after his own death, the biblical narrative includes a surprising event involving his remains. The text states that a body was placed in his grave a year after his death. As soon as the body touched Elisha's remains, the man revived and stood up on his feet.

The historical and religious significance of Elisha continues through various traditions. He served as an advisor to kings from the third through the eighth in Judah between 892 and 832 BCE. Many Christian churches celebrate his feast day on June 14. The Armenian Apostolic Church also commemorates him on a specific Thursday after Pentecost. Some traditions, such as the Carmelite order, claim a spiritual descent from him. His relics have been a subject of historical interest, with claims involving locations in Sebastia and Egypt.
