Samuel is a central figure in the history of ancient Israel. He lived during a major transition in how the nation was governed. He helped move Israel from the era of judges to a unified monarchy. This means he helped change the country from being led by local leaders to being led by kings. Because of his influence, he is venerated as a prophet in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

His story begins with his parents, Elkanah and Hannah. Elkanah was a Levite from the district of Zuph. He lived in Ramathaim and had two wives, Peninnah and Hannah. Hannah struggled because she had no children, which caused her much heartache. During a pilgrimage to the sanctuary at Shiloh, she prayed fervently for a son. She vowed to dedicate the child to God as a nazirite, a person set apart for religious service.

After Samuel was born, Hannah fulfilled her promise. She brought him to Shiloh to serve under Eli, the priest and one of the last judges. When Samuel was about 12 years old, he experienced a divine calling. He heard a voice calling his name in the night. He thought the voice belonged to Eli, but it was actually the Lord. After Eli realized this, he taught Samuel how to respond to the divine call.

As Samuel matured, he became a trusted prophet for all of Israel. This was a difficult time because the Philistines had defeated the Israelites at Eben-Ezer. The Philistines even captured the Ark of the Covenant, the sacred chest of the Israelites. After twenty years of Philistine oppression, Samuel gathered the people at Mizpah. He led them in a battle against the Philistines and won a decisive victory.

To remember this victory, Samuel erected a large stone at the battle site. This event led to a long period of peace for the land. However, Samuel also faced challenges with leadership. He appointed his sons, Joel and Abijah, as his successors. Unfortunately, they were not worthy leaders because they accepted bribes and perverted judgment. This led the Israelites to demand a king so they could be like other nations.

Samuel initially felt that the request for a king was a rejection of God's rule. After receiving divine revelation, he agreed to help. He identified Saul as the first king of Israel. Samuel served as a "king-maker," guiding the transition of power. He warned the people that kings must be held accountable to God. He also warned them not to fall into the worship of other gods like Asherah or Baal.

Samuel's relationship with King Saul was often tense. He had to confront Saul for disobeying specific commands. For example, during a campaign against the Amalekites, Saul spared the king and the best livestock. Samuel told Saul that God had commanded him to destroy everything. Because of this disobedience, Samuel told Saul that God had removed him as king. Later, Samuel secretly anointed David to be the next king in Bethlehem.

Samuel is described as being buried in Ramah. Many traditions identify his burial place as a tomb in the village of Nabi Samwil.

Even after his death, his spirit is mentioned in religious texts. In the first century, the historian Josephus recorded Samuel's life in his work, *Antiquities of the Jews*. His life remains a bridge between different eras of religious and political history.
