Gabriel is a central figure in several major Abrahamic religions. He is most commonly described as an archangel. An archangel is a high-ranking spiritual being. In Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, Gabriel serves as a messenger of God. His primary role is to announce the will of the divine to humankind. This makes him a bridge between the heavenly and earthly realms.

The mechanism of Gabriel's work involves delivering specific messages or interpretations. In the Hebrew Bible, he acts as a revealer. He appears to the prophet Daniel to explain complex visions. This role of interpreting divine mysteries is a key part of his identity. In other traditions, he executes God's will by appearing to specific people. He brings news that can change the course of human history. He acts as an agent to fulfill a divine plan.

Different religious traditions identify various roles and types of angelic service for Gabriel. In Rabbinic Judaism, Gabriel is one of four angels standing at the four sides of God's throne. He is a guardian angel for the Israelites. He is said to stand at the left side of the throne, while Michael stands at the right. In Kabbalah, a form of Jewish mysticism, Gabriel is identified with the sefira of Yesod. He is also described as having a human form with wings. He is sometimes associated with the color of fire or the metal gold.

History shows how the understanding of Gabriel has evolved through different eras. The Hebrew Bible contains the first instances of named angels. The Book of Daniel is the only book in the Hebrew Bible that explicitly names him. During the Second Temple period, between 516 BC and 70 AD, much intertestamental literature was written. This period saw an expansion of the names and ranks of angels. In the Book of Enoch, Gabriel is listed among seven holy angels. He is also described as one of four presences that stand on the four sides of God.

The significance of Gabriel is reflected in the many ways he is revered. In the New Testament, his appearances are pivotal. He tells Zechariah that his wife Elizabeth will bear a son named John the Baptist. Later, he appears to Mary to announce the birth of Jesus. In Islam, Gabriel is an archangel sent to various prophets. Muslims believe he delivered the first five verses of the Al-Alaq to Muhammad. This chapter is the 96th chapter of the Quran.

Many notable interpretations and examples exist regarding his name and identity. The name Gabriel comes from the Hebrew words "gever," meaning man, and "El," meaning God. This translates to "man of God." Proclus of Constantinople suggested this name prefigured Jesus being both man and God. In the 12th century, Saint Bernard interpreted the name as "the strength of God." He believed Gabriel's role announced the strength of Christ. Interestingly, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches that Gabriel lived a mortal life as the prophet Noah.

Gabriel's influence extends to the liturgical calendars of many different churches. For many years, his feast day was celebrated on March 18. In 1921, Pope Benedict XV moved the feast to March 24. In 1969, the Catholic Church moved it to September 29, which is also known as Michaelmas. The Eastern Orthodox Church celebrates him on several different days. These include March 26 and July 13. These dates commemorate his various appearances and miracles throughout history.
