In many stories, Gabriel acts as a messenger. In the Hebrew Bible, he visits a man named Daniel. He helps Daniel understand his visions. In the New Testament, he visits Zechariah. He tells Zechariah that his son, John the Baptist, will be born. Later, Gabriel visits Mary to say she will have a son named Jesus.

In Jewish tradition, Gabriel is a guardian. He is said to protect the people of Israel. Some traditions say he stands at the left side of God's throne. He might even look like a man with wings. He is sometimes linked to the color of gold.

The name Gabriel has a special meaning too. In Hebrew, it comes from words meaning "man" and "God." This makes his name mean "man of God." Some thinkers, like Saint Bernard from the year 1153, had other ideas. He thought the name meant "the strength of God." This was because Gabriel brought news of great strength.

Different churches also have special days to remember him. For a long time, many people celebrated his feast on March 18. In 1921, Pope Benedict XV moved it to March 24. Later, in 1969, the Catholic Church moved it to September 29. This day is often called Michaelmas. Other churches, like the Eastern Orthodox, celebrate him on different dates. They may honor him in March or July to remember his many miracles.
