An archangel is a leader among angels. The word comes from a Greek prefix that means "chief."

Many different religions have ideas about these beings. In the Catholic Church, they hold the second-lowest rank in a long list of angels. This specific order was written down by a person named Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite. He wrote about this in a book called "On the Celestial Hierarchy" during the 5th or 6th century. While the Bible uses the word "archangel" only twice, it mostly talks about Michael.

Most people today know them through stories or art.

Different faiths have their own ways of naming these leaders. In Judaism, some texts call high-ranking angels "princes" to show their status. The Book of Daniel calls Michael a "chief prince." In Islam, the named archangels include Jibra'il, Mika'il, Israfil, and Azrael. Some Jewish traditions also speak of Metatron, who is called the "highest of the angels." In the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, the Book of Enoch is used. This book mentions angels like Raguel, Sariel, and Jerahmeel.

Many people recognize three specific names: Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. In the Roman Catholic Church, these three are celebrated together on September 29. Each angel has a special way they are shown in art.

Michael is often shown in armor with a sword or spear. He is sometimes pictured standing on a dragon. Gabriel is known as a messenger and often carries lilies. Raphael is linked to a story about a man named Tobias. Because of this, he might be shown with a walking staff or a fish.

Other traditions have their own special lists and holy days. The Eastern Orthodox Church mentions thousands of archangels. They celebrate a special day for Michael and other angels on November 8. They also honor Gabriel on dates like March 26 or July 13. In Orthodox art, each angel has a symbolic way of being drawn. Michael's name means "Who is like God?" in Hebrew.

These symbols help people recognize the different roles the angels play.

Some experts look back even further to a faith called Zoroastrianism. They believe this religion has some of the oldest ideas about angels. In this faith, there are beings called Amesha Spentas. These are "beneficent immortals" that act very much like archangels. They inhabit immortal bodies to protect and guide the world. They were created by Ahura Mazda to help build the universe. Each one helps protect different lands and different people.
