A seraph is a heavenly being from ancient traditions. The word comes from the Hebrew word saraph, which means "burning."

This name might suggest they are fiery or glowing. In some old texts, the word was also used to describe a serpent. Some people think this is because of a snake's bright colors. Others think it refers to the heat of a venomous bite. These ideas help us understand how the name began.

Many stories describe how these beings look and act. In the Book of Isaiah, they are seen near the throne of God. These beings have six wings.

They use two wings to fly through the air. They use two wings to cover their faces. They use the last two wings to cover their feet. One story says a seraph used a hot coal from an altar to touch a prophet's lips. This act was meant to clean or purify him.

These ideas have a very long history. The concept likely grew from ancient Egyptian symbols. For example, the uraeus was a cobra used to show power and divinity.

Many old seals from Israel and Judah used Egyptian symbols like the winged sun. Over time, these images changed into the winged beings we recognize today. Different books, like the Book of Enoch, also mention them. These texts describe them as living very close to the throne of God.

Different religions have their own special views of the seraphim. In Judaism, the scholar Maimonides placed them in the fifth rank of ten angel groups.

In Christianity, they are often seen as the highest rank of angels. They are thought to be caretakers of God's throne. They spend their time singing that God is holy. Some Christian thinkers, like Origen, saw them as symbols of the Holy Spirit. In Islam, they are mentioned as sarāfiyun.

Today, these ideas still appear in art and thought. You can see them in beautiful paintings and old buildings.

During the Renaissance, thinkers like Pico della Mirandola used them as models for humans. He believed people could aim to be as full of love as a seraph. Even in modern times, people use these names for monks or in religious services. These stories help people connect with big ideas about the sky and the divine.
