He is also called Michael the Taxiarch. This title refers to his role as a commander of heavenly armies. In many traditions, he is viewed as the warrior of God. He is a figure who represents protection, justice, and the struggle against evil. His importance spans thousands of years of religious history and diverse cultural beliefs.

In Jewish tradition, Michael serves several specific roles. He is often described as the advocate for the people of Israel. An advocate is someone who speaks on behalf of others. He is also seen as a mediator for the Torah, which is the Law of God.

Some texts place him at the right hand of the throne of God. In the Qumran community traditions, he leads the people in the eschatological battle. This refers to a battle occurring at the end of time. He is also thought to act as a High Priest in the heavenly sanctuary.

Christianity preserves many of these Jewish traditions. In the New Testament, the Book of Revelation describes a great battle. Michael fights against Satan and casts him out of heaven. This event prevents Satan from acting as an accuser before God.

The Epistle of Jude also mentions Michael. In that text, the archangel disputes with the devil over the body of Moses. These stories establish Michael as a defender of the faithful and a cosmic warrior.

Catholicism identifies four specific roles or offices for Saint Michael. First, he is the leader of the Army of God. He helps celestial forces triumph over the powers of Hell. Second, he is considered an angel of death. In this role, he carries the souls of Christians toward Heaven.

Artistic depictions of Michael vary across different cultures and eras. In Byzantine tradition, he was sometimes represented as a lion.
