He studied at the Sorbonne in Paris. He also went to the University of London to earn a doctorate. One of his most famous works was about a special color. He studied a blue dye called tekhelet. He claimed to have re-discovered how to make this dye. This discovery made him very well known in the Jewish world. He also wrote many books about Jewish law and the Torah.

His journey began in a place called Łomża in Russian Poland. He was born there on December 3, 1888. His family moved to the United Kingdom in 1898. They lived in a place called Leeds. His father was a rabbi who helped teach him. Later, Herzog moved to Ireland and learned to speak Irish fluently. Because he supported Irish causes, people called him "the Sinn Féin Rabbi." He served as a rabbi in Belfast and then in Dublin.

In 1935, Herzog visited Palestine for the very first time. He had a strong wish to live there. After the first Chief Rabbi, Abraham Kook, died, Herzog was elected to take his place.
