Lewis followed a very busy path in his career. He first studied at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London. He earned his PhD there by studying the history of Islam. During the Second World War, he served in the British Army. He worked in the Royal Armoured Corps and the Intelligence Corps. After the war, he returned to his studies in London. He eventually moved to Princeton University in New Jersey in 1974. This move allowed him to write many important books and articles.

His research changed how people saw the history of the region. At first, he studied medieval Arab history and professional guilds. Later, he focused on the Ottoman Empire and its archives. He wrote that the Middle East faced many internal problems. He argued that these problems helped cause its later decline. He also wrote about the history of antisemitism. His books were written for both students and the general public. Some of his famous works include "The Middle East and the West."

Not all of his ideas were accepted by other experts. Some scholars, like Edward Said, disagreed with his views. They felt his work was not fair to Arab people. They also thought his ideas helped Western empires. In 2007, he even started a new group called ASMEA. He did this to challenge a different group called MESA. Some people said his views were too simple. They felt he did not always use the newest research. His work remained a topic of big debates in universities.

One of his most difficult topics was the Armenian genocide. This was a time in 1915 when many Armenians died. Most historians call this a genocide. However, Lewis argued that it was not a planned policy. He said the deaths came from a struggle between two groups. This view led to many disagreements and even court cases in France. Some historians felt his stance was not accurate. Despite these arguments, he remained a very influential figure in history. He showed how much a single person's ideas can shape the world.
