He was born in Jaffa in British-mandate Palestine. His father was an Islamic judge named 'Abd al-Huda al-Faruqi. Ismail learned about religion at home and in his local mosque. He later studied at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon. This early education helped him understand different ways of thinking. He spent his life exploring how faith and reason work together.

Al-Faruqi's journey through learning was very long and wide. He studied philosophy and theology at several different universities. He earned a master's degree from Indiana University in 1949. Later, he earned another master's degree from Harvard University in 1951. He finished his Ph.D. at Indiana University in 1952. He also spent time studying at Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt. These studies helped him build a deep understanding of the world.

He became a very important teacher at many universities. In 1958, he taught at McGill University in Canada. He also worked at the Central Institute of Islamic Research in Pakistan. Later, he taught at Syracuse University in the United States. At Syracuse, he wrote a famous book called the Historical Atlas of the Religions of the World in 1974. This meant finding ways to connect modern learning with Islamic values. He wrote over 25 books and 100 scholarly articles. He even helped start the International Institute of Islamic Thought.

In May 1986, a very sad event happened in Wyncote, Pennsylvania. Ismail al-Faruqi and his wife, Lois Lamya al-Faruqi, were murdered in their home.
