The Ja'fari school is a way of understanding Islamic law. It is also called Ja'fari jurisprudence or Ja'fari fiqh. This school is very important to Twelver and Ismaili Shia Muslims. It is named after a person named Ja'far al-Sadiq. He was the sixth Imam in the Shia tradition.

This school helps people decide how to live their lives according to their faith. It covers many different topics like taxes and business.

There are different ways people follow this school. One large group is called the Usuli branch. These followers use a tool called ijtihad to find answers. This means they use reasoned arguments to find Islamic laws. They believe a leader called a Mujtahid can interpret sacred sources. This helps the laws stay flexible as the world changes. Another group is the Akhbari branch. They use a more restrictive way of thinking. Very few people follow the Akhbari way today.

This school has a long history in many lands. It became the official law in Iran between the 16th and 18th centuries. This happened during the Safavid period. Today, many followers live in Iran, Iraq, and Azerbaijan. You can also find large groups in Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, and Bahrain. In Lebanon, Ja'fari courts help people with legal disputes. In Iran, these ideas are even part of the country's constitution.

Followers of the Ja'fari school have some unique beliefs. One idea is called Bada'. It is the belief that God may change the course of human history. Another practice is called Nikah Mut'ah. This is a type of marriage with a set time and a set gift. The length of the marriage must be agreed upon first. Other groups, like Sunni Muslims, do not practice this.

There is also Taqiyah, which is a way to stay safe. People might hide their faith if they are in great danger.

Many different groups recognize the importance of this school. In 1959, Azhar University called it the "fifth school." This was alongside the four main Sunni schools. In 2004, King Abdullah II of Jordan listed it in the Amman Message. This message recognized eight different schools of thought. It was also supported by Sadiq al-Mahdi in Sudan. This shows how the Ja'fari school fits into the wider world of faith.
