Twelver Shi'ism is the largest branch of Shia Islam.

It is a belief system with a very long history. Many people follow these ideas today. There are about 170 to 220 million Twelvers around the world. They believe in a special line of leaders called Imams. These leaders are meant to guide the whole Muslim community, or Ummah. They help people understand the Qur'an and follow Islamic law, which is called Sharia.

Twelvers believe these Imams are chosen by a divine decree. This means they are appointed by God rather than by people. The Imams are seen as perfect examples for others to follow. Because of this, followers believe the Imams are free from sin or error. This special quality is known as Ismah, which means protection. The Imams are expected to rule with justice. They also have the authority to explain the deeper, hidden meanings of holy texts.

The name "Twelver" comes from the belief in twelve specific leaders. This line begins with Ali ibn Abi Talib. It ends with Muhammad al-Mahdi. These twelve men are all descendants from the family of the prophet Muhammad. Some people also call this group the Imamiyyah. This name refers to the belief in the infallibility of the Imams. Other names like Ja'fari come from the sixth Imam, Ja'far al-Sadiq. He was a very important teacher of religious law.

History shows how these ideas grew over many centuries. In the beginning, some supporters of Ali were called the Shiites of Ali. Later, leaders like Muhammad al-Baqir and Ja'far al-Sadiq helped form the religious laws. During the ninth century, the religion flourished as books were translated into Arabic. In the year 1501, Isma'il I started the Safavid dynasty in Iran. He made Twelver Shi'ism the official religion of his empire. This helped make Iran a major center for religious learning.

Today, Twelver Shi'ism is found in many different places. Most followers live in Iran, Iraq, and Azerbaijan. Iran is the only country where it is the state religion. You can also find large groups in Bahrain and Lebanon. There are also many people in India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Some smaller groups live in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates. Even though different groups have different rules, they all share important ideas about the Imamate.
