In the Twelver branch of Shia Islam, many followers look to twelve special leaders. These leaders are called the Twelve Imams.

They are seen as the spiritual and political successors to the prophet Muhammad. Many people believe these Imams are exemplary human beings. They are thought to be free from error and sin. This special quality is called ismah, or infallibility. Followers believe God chose them to lead the community through divine decree.

The role of an Imam is very important for guidance. People believe the Imams can interpret the Quran, which is the holy book of Islam. They also help people understand religious laws known as sharia. Some believe the Imams possess special wisdom called Hikmah. They may also hold preserved texts like al-Jafr or al-Jamia. Many followers believe God would not leave humanity without this kind of guidance. There is always an Imam of the era to act as a leader for faith and law.

The history of these leaders begins with Ali ibn Abi Talib. He was a cousin and son-in-law of Muhammad.

Most Imams were the sons of the previous Imam. However, the third Imam, Husayn, was actually the brother of the second Imam, Hasan. This line of leaders is a central part of Twelver theology. These leaders are also important to some Sufi religious orders.

The lives of the Imams involved many difficult moments. Many of the Imams were assassinated during their lives. For example, the first Imam, Ali, was killed in Kufa, Iraq. The third Imam, Husayn, died during the Battle of Karbala. This event is a very important part of Shia identity. Other Imams, like Ja'far ibn Muhammad, were known as great scholars. Some Imams were even imprisoned or poisoned by leaders of the time. These stories of suffering are seen by some as a way to show divine grace.

The twelfth and final Imam is Muhammad al-Mahdi. Twelver and Alevi Muslims believe he is still alive today. He is said to be in a state called the Major Occultation. This means he is hidden from the world. It is believed he will one day return to the earth. When he returns, followers believe he will bring justice and peace to everyone. This belief links the history of the Imams to a future hope for the world.
