His name comes from an Arabic word meaning "divine guidance." This name can mean the one who guides others. It can also mean the one who is guided by God. Many people believe he will appear at the end of times. He is expected to come before Jesus returns to the world. His main job will be to bring justice to everyone. He will work to remove evil and unfairness from the earth.

Different groups of Muslims have different ideas about who he is. In Sunni Islam, the idea is a very popular belief. However, the name Mahdi does not appear in the Quran. It is also not in the two most important Sunni hadith collections. These are called Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. Some Sunni thinkers believe the Mahdi is actually a title for Jesus. Others believe he will be a leader from the family of Muhammad. They say he will have a broad forehead and a curved nose.

For Twelver Shias, the Mahdi is a very important part of their faith. They believe he is the twelfth Imam named Muhammad al-Mahdi. This Imam is the son of the eleventh Imam, Hasan al-Askari. Shias believe he is in a state called occultation. This means he is hidden from view by the will of God. They believe he will one day rise up to fight against tyranny. This belief became very clear in their writings during the tenth century. Famous writers like al-Kulayni helped explain these ideas.

History shows that many people have claimed to be the Mahdi. These people are known as claimants. Some famous claimants include Muhammad Ahmad and Mirza Ghulam Ahmad. The idea became popular during times of political unrest. In the late 7th century, a man named Mukhtar al-Thaqafi made a claim. He said Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyya was the Mahdi. Earlier, in the mid-7th century, some tribes in Syria had similar ideas. They believed a leader would help them return to their old homes.

The concept of the Mahdi has changed over many centuries. At first, the word was just a respectful title. It was used for people like Muhammad or Abraham. During the second Muslim Civil War, it took on a new meaning. It began to describe a ruler who would restore perfect justice. This happened between the years 680 and 692. Since then, the idea has stayed a powerful source of hope. It connects the history of the past to the future of the world.
