A false prophet is someone who claims to have a special connection to a god. They might say they have the gift of prophecy or divine inspiration. These people claim to speak for a deity or act as a teacher of spirituality. Sometimes, people use these claims for bad or evil ends. It is also common for different groups to disagree about leaders. One group might see a person as a true prophet. Another group might call that same person a false prophet. This can even happen within the same religion.

In many traditions, there are ways to tell if a claim is true. In Judaism, the Book of Deuteronomy gives specific rules. If a person shows a miracle but tells people to worship other gods, they are considered false. The penalty for such actions was historically death. The Books of Kings also tell a story about a prophet named Micaiah. He described a scene where a lying spirit spoke through other prophets to trick a king named Ahab. This story shows how false claims can be seen as a test.

Christianity also has many teachings about these figures. In the Gospels, Jesus warned his followers to be very careful. He used a famous example about trees and fruit. He said that you can know a person by their fruits. Just as a bad tree cannot grow good fruit, a false prophet will not show good results. Jesus also warned that some might perform great signs or wonders to lead people away. He told his followers that they should not be easily led astray by these miracles.

There are many specific stories about these figures in the New Testament. The Book of Acts tells of a man named Elymas Bar-Jesus. He was called a magician and a false prophet on the island of Cyprus. He tried to turn a leader named Sergius Paulus away from his faith. Another well-known figure is mentioned in the Book of Revelation. This figure is described as a false prophet who faces a final judgment. These stories help believers understand how to stay vigilant and test what they hear.

In Islam, many scholars believe that Muhammad was the final prophet. This means that no new prophets are expected to come after him. There is a belief in a figure called the Dajjal, who is sometimes called the Antichrist. The Dajjal is said to appear and try to deceive many people. He might even mimic miracles, such as healing the sick. However, Muslims believe that Jesus will return to defeat the Dajjal. This event is part of a larger story about bringing peace and justice to the world.
