A false prophet is someone who claims to speak for a god. They may say they have a special gift. But they do not actually have this gift. They might use these claims for bad reasons. Sometimes, people disagree on who is a true prophet. One group may see a leader as holy. Another group may call that same person a false prophet.

In Judaism, there are rules for this. If a prophet asks people to worship other gods, they are false. In the Bible, the prophet Micaiah tells a story about this. He describes a lying spirit that spoke to other prophets.

In Christianity, Jesus warned his followers. He said to watch for false prophets. He said they might look good on the outside. But he said to judge them by their actions. He used the idea of trees and fruit. A bad tree cannot grow good fruit.

In Islam, many believe Muhammad was the last prophet. Some believe a figure called the Dajjal will come. The Dajjal might try to trick people. He may even act like he can do miracles. Muslims believe Jesus will return to defeat him.
