This school is part of the Ahl al-Hadith tradition. It is the third-largest Sunni school in the world. Today, more than 350 million people follow these ideas. This represents about 17.5% of all Muslims globally.

This way of thinking works by looking at specific sources. The most important source is the Qur'an, which is the sacred scripture. The second source is the Sunnah. The Sunnah includes the sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad.

If a rule is not clear, followers use Qiyas. Qiyas is a type of analogical reasoning. It helps people find answers by comparing new situations to known ones. The school also accepts the consensus of scholars, known as Ijmā'.

The school is named after a famous scholar named al-Shafi'i. He lived in the early 9th century. People often call him the father of Muslim jurisprudence.

He traveled to many great centers of learning in the Middle East. He studied under other famous teachers like Mālik ibn Anas. Al-Shafi'i wrote a very important book called al-Risalah. This book explains the basic rules of his legal thought. It was written while he was in Egypt.

History shows how these ideas moved across the world. In the 10th century, cities like Mecca and Medina became centers for the school. Later, the school was very important in Egypt under the Ayyubid dynasty. Traders and merchants helped spread these beliefs across the Indian Ocean. This helped the ideas reach far places like Southeast Asia. However, the rise of the Ottomans in the 16th century changed things. The Ottomans began to use the Hanafi school for their judges instead.

You can find many Shafi'i followers in specific parts of the world today. They are the main group in Southeast Asia, including Indonesia and Malaysia. They are also very common in the Horn of Africa. This includes countries like Djibouti, Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Somalia. In the Middle East, many Kurdish Muslims follow this school. It is also common in parts of Egypt and Yemen. Even in the United States, it is one of the two main Sunni schools practiced.
