He was born on August 26, 1962, in Geneva. His family originally came from Egypt. His mother was the daughter of Hassan al-Banna. Al-Banna was the person who started the Muslim Brotherhood in 1928. Ramadan has spent much of his life studying big ideas. He writes about Islam and how it works in Europe. He also calls himself a "Salafi reformist." This means he looks for ways to update or change how people practice their faith.

Ramadan has held many teaching jobs at famous schools. He earned a PhD in Arabic and Islamic studies from the University of Geneva. He also wrote a big paper about the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. He taught at the University of Notre Dame in the United States for a short time. Later, he became a professor at Oxford University in the United Kingdom. He also worked at Hamad Bin Khalifa University in Qatar. Some people in the Netherlands also had him teach at Erasmus University Rotterdam. These jobs allowed him to share his ideas with many different people.

His career has not always been easy. In 2004, the United States government took away his visa. This meant he was not allowed to stay in the country. The government said he gave money to groups they called terrorists. Ramadan said he did not know what those groups were doing. He went to court to fight this decision. He wanted to show that he did not mean to support those groups. He believed he should be allowed to come to the U.S. to talk and teach.

Many people have had very strong feelings about his work. Some politicians and teachers called him a "radical Islamist." They used the phrase "wolf in sheep's clothing" to describe him. Because of this, he was not allowed to enter some countries like Egypt or Tunisia. He said this happened because he criticized their governments. In the Netherlands, a university dismissed him from his job. He said this was because of his political views. These moments show how much people disagree about his ideas.

Ramadan has also faced very serious legal trouble.

This decision was about three different women. These legal cases are very important parts of his life story. They show the different ways people view his impact on the world.
