He lived from 1849 until 1905. He was a teacher, a judge, and a top religious leader. Many people call him the Grand Mufti of Egypt. He was a main figure in a movement called Islamic Modernism. This movement helped people think about how faith and the modern world work together. He wanted to help his society grow through new ideas.

Abduh believed that using your mind was a way to honor God. He thought people should use reason to understand the world. He did not want people to just copy old ways without thinking. Instead, he said people have the gift of independent thought. He believed this independence leads to true happiness.

To him, education was the best tool for change. He wanted children to learn both religion and science. This way, they could grow to be wise and fair.

Abduh's journey began in the Nile Delta. His father was part of the local ruling group. He went to school in a place called Tanta. Later, he studied at the famous Al-Azhar University in Cairo. There, he met a teacher named Jamal ad-Din al-Afghani.

This teacher taught him about politics and science. They worked together to share ideas through newspapers. Al-Afghani helped Abduh connect his spiritual life with logical thinking.

Abduh held many important jobs during his life. He was a professor of history and Arabic. He also worked as an editor for the national newspaper. In 1888, he became a judge in the courts.

By 1899, he was appointed the Grand Mufti. He traveled to many places like France, Britain, and Lebanon. In Paris, he helped publish a journal called al-ʿUrwa al-Wuthqā. He even visited libraries in Vienna and Berlin to learn more.

His ideas helped connect different parts of the world. While traveling, he worked to build friendship between different faiths. He hoped for respect between Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. He believed that many people suffered because of ignorance. He wanted to fix this through better schools and teaching. Some people disagreed with his new ideas. However, many of his students saw him as a great leader.
