He led a global group known as the Gülen movement. By 2010, this movement had between 8 and 10 million followers. Gülen was known for his many different roles. He was a poet, a writer, and a social critic. He also promoted a way of thinking that combined Islamic faith with modern democracy. Many people saw him as one of the most important Muslim figures in the world.

One of the main ways his movement worked was through education. Gülen encouraged his followers to build schools that focused on STEM subjects. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and math. By 2014, his followers had opened over 2,000 of these schools. These schools were located in more than 150 different countries. The movement also created charities, banks, and other groups to help society. In 1994, he helped start the Journalists and Writers Foundation. This group helped different people, like atheists and Christians, talk about important ideas together.

Gülen's life began in the village of Korucuk, near Erzurum, in Turkey. While there is some debate, most records say he was born on April 27, 1941. His father was an imam, which is a religious leader. Gülen began his own career as a preacher when he was still a teenager. In 1959, he became an assistant imam at the Üç Şerefeli Mosque in Edirne. He worked in the Turkish civil service as a preacher until 1981. During this time, his influence and the number of his followers grew very steadily.

His relationship with the Turkish government changed many times over the years. In 2003, his movement worked with Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's political party, the AKP. This alliance helped the AKP gain power, but the two groups later had a big disagreement. By 2016, the Turkish government began targeting the movement heavily. They seized assets worth more than $12 billion. This included 1,043 private schools and 15 universities.

The government also accused Gülen of being the mastermind behind a coup attempt in 2016. Gülen denied these claims and asked for an international group to investigate.

Because of these tensions, Gülen moved to the United States in March 1999. He lived near Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania, for the last 25 years of his life. While Turkey called him a terrorist leader, the United States and several other countries did not. They said there was no credible evidence to support those labels. Gülen died on October 20, 2024, in Pennsylvania. A very large funeral was held in a stadium in New Jersey. About 15,000 people attended to honor him.
