He lived from 1906 to 1966. Many people look at his life and his many writings today. He was a leading member of a group called the Muslim Brotherhood. Qutb wrote 24 published books and over 581 articles. Some of his works were about novels and even education. He is most famous for his ideas on how Islam should work in society. One of his largest works was a 30-volume commentary on the Quran called In the Shade of the Qur'an.

Qutb's journey began in the village of Musha in Upper Egypt. His father was a landowner and a political activist. As a young boy, Qutb loved the sound of melodic Quran recitations. He actually memorized the entire Quran by the age of 10. He was also a very curious child who loved collecting books. By age 12, he had his own library of 25 books. He would often teach the knowledge he gained to people in his village. Even as a teenager, he began writing articles and questioning how schools worked.

As he grew up, Qutb moved to Cairo to continue his studies. He worked as a teacher for the Ministry of Public Instruction. During this time, he was a writer and a critic of literature. He even helped a famous Egyptian novelist named Naguib Mahfouz become known. In 1939, he began working for Egypt's Ministry of Education. He was very interested in how different cultures and ideas shaped people. He studied the works of many different thinkers to build his own views.

Between 1948 and 1950, Qutb traveled to the United States. He went there on a scholarship to study how schools were run. He studied at places like Stanford University and Colorado State College. While in the West, he wrote his book Social Justice in Islam. However, his time in America changed how he viewed Western culture. When he returned to Egypt, he wrote a piece called The America that I Have Seen. In it, he criticized American life for being too focused on money and things.

Today, people have very different opinions about the legacy of Sayyid Qutb.
