Children of the Alley is a famous novel by Naguib Mahfouz. He was a great Egyptian writer who won the Nobel Prize in Literature. The book is also known by the title Children of Gebelawi. It tells a deep story about hope and struggle. The story takes place in a pretend alley in Cairo. This setting helps people think about big ideas. It shows the fight between good and bad people.

The book works like a collection of short stories. These stories follow many different heroes over many years. Each hero tries to help the people living in the alley. Some heroes represent figures from history like Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad. These characters stand for Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Later, a character named Arafa represents modern science. The heroes try to stop strongmen who rule the alley. These strongmen are often mean and take money from the people.

Naguib Mahfouz wrote this book in Egypt. He first shared it in a daily newspaper called Al-Ahram in 1959. At that time, it was published in parts called a serial. Many religious leaders were very upset by the story. They thought the book was wrong. Because of this, the book was banned in Egypt for a long time. It was first printed as a book in Lebanon in 1967.

There are many different versions of this book in English. One version was translated by Philip Stewart in 1981. Another version was written by Peter Theroux for Doubleday in 1996. The book has faced many hard times in history. In 1989, a man named Omar Abdel-Rahman spoke out against Mahfouz. In 1994, two men attacked Mahfouz outside his home in Cairo. He was stabbed in the neck during the attack. He survived, but he suffered until he died in 2006.

This novel connects to many things we know about storytelling. It uses a style similar to the famous Arabian Nights. Mahfouz was one of the first writers to bring the novel form to the Middle East. The story is based on his life in Old Cairo. He grew up in a family that lived in those famous alleys. Even though the story is sad, it ends with a message of hope. The people in the book believe that light will come after the night.
