Farah follows many steps to share his stories. He started by writing short stories in his native Somali language. Later, he began writing in English while he was a student. He creates long series of books called trilogies. One is called "Variations on the Theme of an African Dictatorship." Another is named "Blood in the Sun." He even uses a special way of telling stories. In his book "Maps," he uses second-person narration. This means the story uses the word "you" to talk to the reader.

His journey as a writer began a long time ago. He was born in 1945 in Baidoa, Italian Somaliland. His father was a merchant and an interpreter. His mother was an oral poet. As a young boy, he went to schools in Somalia and Ethiopia. He learned to read and write in English, Arabic, and Amharic. In 1963, he had to leave his home region. His life is linked to the many places he has lived. For 22 years, he lived in exile away from Somalia. This means he lived in other countries because he could not return home. During this time, he taught in places like Sweden, Sudan, and Nigeria. He has lived in many lands, including Britain and South Africa. Today, he lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Cape Town. Even though he lives far away, his writing stays connected to his roots. He remains a very important scholar of Somali studies.
