Abdulrazak Gurnah is a famous novelist and a teacher.

He writes stories that help us understand people. His books often explore how life changes when people move. He writes about the effects of colonialism and the lives of refugees. These stories look at the gap between different cultures and continents. Many readers find his work to be very compassionate and full of heart. He gives a voice to people who are often not heard.

Gurnah began his writing journey in a very personal way. When he was in his 20s, he felt very homesick. He started by writing his thoughts in a private diary. These notes eventually grew into longer reflections about his home. Later, he began writing fictional stories about other people. This habit helped him record his own experiences of being displaced. His first novel, Memory of Departure, was published in 1987.

Gurnah's life has been shaped by big changes in history. He was born on December 20, 1948, in the Sultanate of Zanzibar. His father and uncle were businessmen from Yemen. In 1968, he left his home island at age 18. This was during the Zanzibar Revolution, which changed the ruling leaders. He arrived in England as a refugee during this time. He later studied at Christ Church College and the University of Kent.

His career includes many important books and awards. His novel Paradise was published in 1994 and was very popular. Another book, By the Sea, came out in 2001. In 2021, he won the Nobel Prize in Literature. This was a huge honor for his writing. He was the first African writer to win this prize since 2007. He has also worked as a professor at many different universities.

Today, Gurnah continues to share his knowledge with the world. He is the Arts Professor of Literature at New York University Abu Dhabi. He also holds the title of Emeritus Professor at the University of Kent. While he lives in England, he keeps a strong bond with Tanzania. He says his homeland is always in his imagination. His work connects the history of East Africa to the whole world. He uses English to tell these important stories.
