Abdulrazak Gurnah is a famous writer and teacher. He was born in Zanzibar in 1948. His family came from Yemen. Later, he had to leave his home. He moved to England in 1968 as a refugee. This happened during the Zanzibar Revolution.

Gurnah began writing when he was in his 20s. He felt homesick. At first, he wrote in a diary. These notes grew into stories about other people. His books often tell stories of people far from home. He writes about how people feel when they move to new lands. His stories show the effects of colonialism. Colonialism is when one country takes control of another.

Many people now read his work. In 2021, he won the Nobel Prize in Literature. This is a very big award. He was the first African writer to win it since 2007. He has written many books, like Paradise and By the Sea. He also teaches at a university in Abu Dhabi. Gurnah still thinks about his home. He says his homeland stays in his mind.
