People who follow these ideas believe that Islam should guide how a society works. They think Islam should influence political systems and social life. These followers, sometimes called "al-Islamiyyun," often want to use sharia laws to run a country. Sharia refers to laws that come from Islam. Some believe this system is better than other ways of ruling. They might compare it to democracy or capitalism. They want to create states that are built on Islamic values.

There are many different ways these movements try to reach their goals.

Some people use a "reformist" way by working with local communities. They do social work and political activism to change society from the bottom up. Other groups use a "revolutionary" way by trying to take control of the state. Some even believe in using armed revolution to make changes. These groups can be political parties or even militias. They can be peaceful activists or more radical groups. The way they act can vary a lot depending on the group.

Many important thinkers helped shape these ideas in the 20th century.

Rashid Rida was a leader who wanted to unite the Muslim world. He believed that religious leaders should guide the community. Hasan al-Banna was an Egyptian teacher who started the Muslim Brotherhood. Another famous name is Sayyid Qutb. Ruhollah Khomeini was the founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Abul A'la Maududi was also a central figure. These men all had different ideas about how to bring Islam back to a position of strength.

History shows how the word "Islamism" has changed over time.

It first appeared in English in the late 1600s and early 1700s. For a long time, it was not used very much by scholars. The word became common again after the Iranian Revolution in 1978. This happened when Ayatollah Khomeini brought an "Islamic government" to Iran. Today, many different groups use these ideas around the world. Some are in Turkey, like the Justice and Development Party. Others are in Malaysia, Bangladesh, or Pakistan.

It is important to understand the difference between Islam and Islamism.

Many people say Islam is a religion that has existed for over a thousand years. They see Islamism as a modern political movement from the 20th century. Some followers say they are just renewing the faith. They do not like the word "Islamism" because they think it sounds negative. They prefer to call themselves an "Islamic movement." Critics worry that the term can lead to unfair stereotypes. Understanding these different views helps us see how complex the topic is.
