An Islamic state is a type of government based on sharia. Sharia is a set of laws used in Islamic teachings.

This idea has been used to describe many different groups throughout history. Some people use the term to talk about modern ways of ruling. The concept often involves how religion and politics work together. It is a way of organizing a society around shared beliefs. This makes the topic very important for understanding much of world history.

One key part of many Islamic governments is a concept called al-Shura. This word means meeting or consulting with others to make decisions.

Leaders use this to follow the teachings of the Quran and the Sunnah. In these meetings, a leader is often elected to head the group. Every member should have a fair chance to speak their mind. The goal is to find what is best for the public interest. This process helps ensure that decisions are not made by just one person.

History shows several different stages for these states over many centuries. The first state was established by Muhammad in Medina in 622 CE.

After him, the Rashidun Caliphs ruled from 632 to 661 CE. The Umayyad Caliphate grew very large between 661 and 750 CE. Later, the Abbasid Caliphate ruled from 750 to 1258 CE. Historian Majid Khadduri describes six stages of this history. These stages move from small city-states to large empires and then to modern nation-states.

In 1924, the Ottoman Caliphate was abolished by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. This was a major turning point for many people in the Muslim world.

Some thinkers, like Rashid Rida, wanted to create a new kind of state. They believed a leader should have both religious and political power. Other thinkers, such as Abul A'la Maududi, had different ideas for modern states. Maududi wanted to combine democratic ideas with social care for the poor. These different views helped shape how people thought about government in the twentieth century.

Today, many Muslim countries use Islamic law in their legal systems. Some countries are called Islamic republics, such as Iran, Pakistan, and Mauritania.

Pakistan became a republic under its 1956 constitution. Mauritania adopted its status on November 28, 1958. Iran became an Islamic republic after its revolution in 1979. Other places, like Brunei, are absolute Islamic monarchies. Brunei has had Islam as its official religion since 1959. These different systems show how the idea of an Islamic state continues to exist today.
