An Islamic state is a government based on sharia. Sharia is a set of Islamic laws.

History shows many stages of these states. The first one began in Medina in 622 CE. Muhammad helped start this group. After him, leaders called caliphs ruled. They led big empires like the Umayyad and Abbasid groups. One key idea was al-Shura. This means leaders meet to talk and decide things. They try to do what is best for the public.

In 1924, the Ottoman Empire ended. This was a big change for many people. Some thinkers wanted to bring back a single leader. They wanted a state that used both religion and law. Today, many Muslim countries use Islamic law in some way. Some countries say Islam is their official religion. Many of these are called Islamic republics. For example, Iran and Pakistan are republics.
