Hizb ut-Tahrir is a large political group that works around the world.

Its main goal is to bring back a caliphate. A caliphate is a single state that unites all Muslim communities, which they call the ummah. This group wants to use sharia, or Islamic law, to rule many lands. They see history as a constant struggle between Islam and those who do not believe. The group believes that the current way countries are run is a challenge to Islam. They want to change this through a process they call Jihad.

To them, this means working to bring all people under Islamic rule.

The group follows a specific plan in three stages. They look at how the Prophet Muhammad established his state in thirteen years. First, they work to find and convert new members to their cause. Second, they build a network of small, private study circles and secret cells. Third, they try to gain influence within governments and the military. They hope to use this influence to change how a country is led. Some members may even change their own habits to blend into elite groups. This helps them work toward a goal called nussrah, which is a way to change a government.

The history of the group began in 1953. It was started in Jerusalem by a man named Taqi al-Din al-Nabhani. He was an Islamic scholar from Haifa who had studied in Egypt. He even served as a qadi, which is a religious court judge. Al-Nabhani wrote a draft constitution to show how a caliphate would work. After he died in 1977, Abdul Qadeem Zallum became the new leader. Later, in 2003, Ata Khalil Abu-Rashta took over the leadership. Each leader has guided the group through different times and methods.

There are many facts to know about how the group operates today. The group has spread to more than 50 different countries. Some estimates say they have between tens of thousands and one million members. Their leadership centers are in Jordan and London. Many governments have banned the group, including Russia, China, and Germany. It is also banned in many Arab countries, though not in Lebanon or the UAE. In 2017, the government of Indonesia even took away their legal status. This happened because the government felt they were too extreme.

If the group ever achieves its goal, life would look very different. Their draft constitution says the state would be a single, unitary land. The leader, called a caliph, would be elected by the people. They want the currency to be made only of gold and silver. Arabic would be the only language used by the state. They also plan for all Muslim men over fifteen to have military training. This shows how much they want to change the way society works. They use the internet today to share these ideas with many people.
