The Salafi movement is a group of reform movements within Sunni Islam.

Many people in this movement want to bring back the traditions of the past. They look to the first three generations of Muslims for guidance. These early people are known as the Salaf.

Followers believe these ancestors showed the purest way to live a life of faith. This movement seeks to renew Muslim life through these ancient ways.

To guide their lives, Salafis rely on specific sources. They look first to the Qur'an. They also follow the Hadith, which are records of the Prophet Muhammad's words and actions.

They also value the consensus of the early community. Salafis do not follow the four main schools of Islamic law. Instead, they use a method called ijtihad. This means they use independent reasoning to find answers. They prefer to follow the Prophet directly rather than following later interpretations.

History shows that this movement has many different roots. Some thinkers say it grew in the late 19th century. It was a reaction to the spread of European ideas during that time.

Famous figures like al-Afghani and Muhammad Abduh were part of this era. Later, Rashid Rida became a major leader for these ideas. He was a student of Abduh and helped spread Salafi thought. Many modern scholars also look to the writings of Ibn Taymiyya from the 1300s.

There are several different ways people practice Salafism today. One large group is called the purists, who stay out of politics.

A second group is the political Salafis, who take part in government. A much smaller group is the jihadi-Salafis, who use armed struggle. There are also many regional movements. For example, the Wahhabi movement is in Arabia. The Padri movement is in Indonesia. The Ahl-i Hadith movement is in South Asia.

Salafism affects how people act in their daily lives. They try to follow the sunnah, or the Prophet's way, in everything they do.

This might include how they eat or drink. Some people use three fingers when eating. Others drink water in three separate pauses. They believe these small actions help them stay close to the original faith. It is a way to make their daily habits match their beliefs.
