Islamophobia is a word used to describe a specific type of fear. It refers to an irrational fear or a dislike of the religion of Islam. It also describes hostility toward Muslims. Many people who hold these views see Muslims as a threat to the world. This is often based on unfair stereotypes rather than real facts.

Muslims are actually a very diverse group of people. They come from many different ethnic and cultural backgrounds across the globe. However, some people incorrectly treat them as if they are all the same. This can lead to unfair treatment in daily life.

This unfair treatment can happen in many different ways. It can look like prejudice or discrimination against people because of their faith. Some scholars argue that Islamophobia is a form of racism. They believe it is tied to how people are treated based on their identity. A study from 2013 showed that certain people face more risk. Specifically, Muslim women are often more vulnerable to attacks. This is especially true for women wearing headscarves or face veils.

Because of these issues, the world has tried to take action. On March 15, 2022, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution. This was introduced by Pakistan for the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. They named March 15 as the International Day to Combat Islamophobia.

People have used different words to talk about these feelings. Some use terms like anti-Muslimism or Muslimophobia. In Germany, people use the word Islamophobie. In Scandinavia, the term Muslimhat is used to mean hatred of Muslims. The word Islamophobia became much more common in the 1990s. This happened after the Runnymede Foundation defined it. Before that, the term was used less often in English. One person used the term in a 1910 thesis to describe prejudice in Western civilization. In the Muslim world, the term is translated as ruhāb al-islām. This literally means a phobia of Islam.

There is a lot of debate about what the word means exactly. Some people argue about whether the term is the best choice. They suggest using "anti-Muslim" instead to describe prejudice. Some critics say the word might be used to avoid criticizing religious ideas. However, many experts and activists disagree with this view. They say these arguments are just ways to deny that Islamophobia exists. In 1996, the Runnymede Trust started a group to study this. This group was called the Commission on British Muslims and Islamophobia. Their important report was published in November 1997.

Understanding Islamophobia helps us see how social groups interact. It is similar to other terms like homophobia or xenophobia. These words describe negative attitudes toward a specific group of people. Some researchers say Islamophobia is a social anxiety rather than just a personal fear. It is a way that society treats certain groups of people. By studying these patterns, people can work to make the world fairer. Learning about these different terms helps us understand complex social issues. It is an important part of studying human rights and history.
