Harassment is a word used to describe many different kinds of mean behavior. It involves actions that demeaning, humiliating, or intimidating to another person. In a legal sense, these actions are seen as upsetting or threatening. Sometimes, this behavior is based on discrimination. This means it targets a person's specific rights or characteristics. When these behaviors happen over and over, it is often called bullying.

There are many different ways that harassment can look in daily life. It can be psychological, which means it is hard to see because there is no physical evidence. This might include verbal comments or aggressive gestures that lower a person's self-esteem. It can also happen in a workplace, where it is sometimes called mobbing. In other places, like with landlords, it might involve making a home uncomfortable. A landlord might enter a home without permission or interfere with a person's belongings.

The word has a very long history. The English word comes from the verb "harass," which was borrowed from French. In the 1500s, the French word meant to bother or trouble someone. It could also mean being very tired or exhausted. Some historians think the word might come from a Latin translation of a history book about a war. Other ideas link the word to old terms for horses or even old shouts used to command dogs. The English version of the word has been used since 1753.

Harassment can target specific groups of people. This is often called discrimination and is against the law in many places. For example, racial harassment targets a person's race, color, or nationality. Religious harassment might involve forcing someone to change their religion. There is also sexual harassment, which involves unwanted attention or comments related to a person's sex. This often happens in schools, workplaces, or the military. In some areas, even police officers must follow laws to avoid harassing people.

Today, much of this behavior happens in the digital world. Online harassment occurs on social media, in chat rooms, or during video games. People might post mean comments or share private information without permission. Sometimes, people use "trolling," which is acting mean just to provoke others. This can even affect important people like politicians. It is important to know that many places have rules to protect people's dignity. These rules help make sure everyone can feel safe and respected.
