It includes using the internet, cell phones, or other tools to send mean messages. People might post text or images to embarrass someone. This behavior is often repeated over a long time. It is also done on purpose to cause harm. This is different from a normal argument between friends. In a normal conflict, people usually have a similar amount of power. In cyberbullying, the person being targeted often cannot easily defend themselves.

There are many different ways people act online.

Some people use fake profiles to stay anonymous. Anonymity means they hide their real names so they cannot be caught. Others use doxxing to share private info like a home address. Trolling is another way where people post things to get a reaction. Some trolls do this just for their own amusement. There is also cyberstalking, which is very serious. Cyberstalking involves using electronic messages to threaten a person's safety.

This issue has changed a lot over the years. Since the 2000s, cyberbullying has become much more common. This happened because more young people started using social media. In 2015, a group called the i-Safe Foundation shared some facts. They found that over half of teens had been bullied online. About that same number of teens had also been bullies.

Many people who are bullied online were also bullied in person before. This shows that online bullying is often an extension of old ways of bullying.

Different places have different rules to help people.

In the United States, awareness grew a lot during the 2010s. This was partly because of famous cases that people heard about. Now, several states and different countries have passed laws. Some laws focus on teenagers in school. Other laws cover harassment by adults. If an adult is being harassed, people usually call the local police. These laws help make sure that being mean online has consequences.

Researchers are always looking for ways to understand this.

They studied what happened during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many people stayed home and spent more time on the internet. One study in the Journal of Social Psychology found more bullying during this time. However, another study of 6,500 Canadian youth found something different. Those children did not have higher rates of bullying. The researchers thought this might be because parents watched their children's online activity more closely.
