Cyberbullying

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Cyberbullying is a specific form of harassment that uses electronic means to target individuals. It is often defined as an aggressive and intentional behavior. This behavior is carried out by an individual or a group using electronic contact. It occurs repeatedly over time against a victim who cannot easily defend themselves.

This distinguishes cyberbullying from normal conflicts between people of equal power. In a normal conflict, the participants usually have similar status. Cyberbullying, however, involves an imbalance of power through digital tools. It is a serious issue that affects both the bully and the victim.

There are several distinct methods used in cyberbullying. One method is denigration, which means posting cruel rumors or falsehoods to damage a person's reputation. Another method is impersonation, where an offender pretends to be someone else. For example, a hacker might take over a social media account to spread disinformation.

Another tactic is doxxing, which is the act of disclosing a victim's private data. This can include a person's full name, home address, or phone number. Some bullies also use exclusion, which means intentionally leaving someone out of an online group to be cruel. These tactics can be very effective because digital content spreads easily and remains accessible for a long time.

Cyberbullying can take many different forms depending on the platform and the intent. Trolling is a common type of behavior found in online communities like social media or gaming. Trolls intentionally try to provoke or offend others to get a reaction. Some trolls do this for personal amusement, while others engage in more harmful mischief.

Another form is cyberstalking, which is considered more dangerous than other types of bullying. Cyberstalking involves using electronic communications to stalk a victim. This often poses a credible threat to the victim's physical safety. A specific example involved a man named Paris Deshaunte Evitt. Between 2018 and 2020, he used email, Facebook, and text messages to control and threaten a former partner.

Other specialized forms of digital harassment include hate raids and spamming. On livestreaming services like Twitch, a hate raid occurs when many viewers flood a chat. These viewers use hateful messages to prevent a streamer from continuing their broadcast. Often, these viewers use automated bots, which makes them difficult to block.

Spamming involves creating multiple accounts to send messages to a target en masse. This can happen even if the recipient has already blocked the sender. There is also sexual harassment, which includes a type of blackmail called sextortion. In sextortion, a person is coerced into sharing intimate images. The offender then threatens to release those images unless money is paid.

Since the 2000s, cyberbullying has become increasingly common. This rise is linked to the increased use of social media among teenagers and adolescents. In 2015, statistics from the i-Safe Foundation showed how widespread this issue had become. Over half of adolescents and teens reported being bullied online. Interestingly, about the same number of teens reported engaging in cyberbullying themselves.

In many cases, cyberbullying is an extension of traditional bullying. Most students who are bullied online have also experienced physical or verbal bullying in person. Bullies sometimes prefer online confrontations because they can target students who are physically stronger.

Awareness and legal responses have changed significantly over the last decade. In the United States, awareness rose during the 2010s due to high-profile cases. As a result, several states and other countries have passed laws to combat these behaviors. Some laws specifically target bullying among teenagers in schools. Other laws extend to cover broader forms of harassment. For adult cyberharassment, reports are usually filed with local police.

Researchers continue to study the causes and effects of online aggression. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people spent more time online due to quarantine. A study in the Journal of Social Psychology found an increase in pro-cyberbullying attitudes and behavior during this time. However, other research shows different results. A study of over 6,500 Canadian youth in grades 4 through 12 did not find higher rates of involvement. Researchers suggested this might be because parents monitored online activities more closely while children were at home.
