Cybercrime

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Cybercrime is a term for many different illegal acts. These crimes happen using digital devices or computer networks. People might use them to steal information or disrupt services. This can cause harm to people, businesses, or even governments. Some crimes target the computer systems themselves. Other crimes use computers as tools to trick people. This can hurt a person's money or their reputation.

There are different ways these crimes work. Some are called pure-technology crimes. These target the computer technology ecosystem to break it. Others are called cyber-advanced crimes. These use technology to target people, businesses, or property. One common way is through computer fraud. This includes using malware or viruses to steal data. Another way is phishing, which uses fake emails to trick people. Some scammers even use a trick called digital arrest. They pretend to be police to steal money from victims.

History shows that these crimes are becoming more organized. In the year 2000, the United Nations classified these crimes into five groups. These groups included unauthorized access and computer espionage. They also included sabotage and damaging computer data. Since 2001, officials have seen many more network problems. Some crimes involve large groups working together across borders. This is often called being transnational. This means the criminals and the victims may be in different countries.

Many facts show how serious these risks are. In 2024, ransomware attacks were a huge global issue. There were 5,263 large and successful ransomware attacks that year. These attacks can lock files and demand money to fix them. In 2024, the average ransom amount was $5.2 million. Some attacks even hit hospitals and caused serious harm. For example, an attack on Synnovis in the UK canceled many surgeries. Another large ransom of $100 million was demanded from India's Regional Cancer Center.

Cybercrime is a big part of our connected world. It can even lead to cyberwarfare between nations. This happens when countries use computers to attack each other. An example was the attack on Estonia's infrastructure in 2007. Because of this, many leaders now study how to protect networks. The World Economic Forum says cybercrime is a top risk for the world. It is a challenge that affects how we use the internet every day. We must learn how to stay safe in cyberspace.
