Malware is a word for software made to cause trouble. It is a short way of saying "malicious software."

This software is designed to disrupt computers, servers, or networks. It can also leak private information or block access to files. Some malware even targets the systems that run electricity networks. This makes it a serious problem for people and businesses. In 2017, there were over 669 million different versions of malware. This was twice as many as there were in 2016. Cybercrime is growing and could cost the world economy trillions of dollars.

There are many different ways that malware works. A computer virus is a program that hides inside a normal file. It makes copies of itself and puts those copies into other programs. A worm is a bit different because it is a stand-alone program. It does not need to hide in other files to spread. Instead, it travels across networks to find and infect new computers.

A Trojan horse uses a trick to get into a system. It pretends to be a safe or useful program. Once a person runs it, the hidden bad code is set free. This can create a backdoor, which lets a stranger access a computer from far away.

Scientists have studied these ideas for a long time. In 1949, John von Neumann showed that a program could reproduce itself in theory. Later, Fred Cohen experimented with computer viruses to prove this was possible. He also looked at how they could hide from being found. In the 1980s, the first IBM PC virus was found in Pakistan. It was called (c)Brain and was created by the Farooq Alvi brothers. Before the internet was common, viruses spread using floppy disks. They would hide in the code that tells a computer how to start up.

Malware can be used for many different reasons today. Some people use it to steal bank numbers or passwords. Others use it to make money through things like cryptomining. In these cases, a computer might run slower or get very hot. Some malware is used for sabotage to break things for political reasons. For example, a program called Stuxnet was used to interfere with industrial systems. Other attacks, like Shamoon, have targeted large companies. Even small devices like USB fans or toys can sometimes spread malware if they are not made carefully.

Staying safe from malware is a very important job. Most problems can be stopped by using antivirus software. You can also use a firewall to help protect your network. It is a good idea to install regular patches to fix software holes. Making backups of your files is another great way to stay safe. If a system gets infected, it is often best to isolate it from the rest of the network. Even though malware is always changing, these steps help keep your digital life secure.
