Environmental crime involves illegal acts that harm our natural world. These crimes target wildlife, plants, and many natural resources.

They include things like illegal logging and the trade of stolen timber. People also engage in illegal wildlife trade involving endangered species. This is against a rule called CITES. Other crimes include illegal mining and smuggling substances that hurt the ozone layer. Some people also dump hazardous waste or fish in ways that are not allowed.

Many different things cause these crimes to happen. Often, people do them to make money through economic incentives. Some people want products that are very scarce. Others might not care enough about the environment. Sometimes, there is a lack of good rules to protect property. In other cases, there is not enough money or tools to enforce the laws. Corruption and political problems can also make it hard to stop these acts. This makes it a very difficult job for leaders to fix.

These crimes are a huge global problem. Environmental crime is the fourth largest criminal activity in the world. It grows by five to seven percent every year. In 2016, the value of these crimes was between US$91 billion and US$258 billion. This was much larger than the illegal trade in small arms. More than half of this money comes from illegal logging and cutting down forests. International groups like Interpol began fighting these crimes in 1992. Interpol helps police from different countries work together.

Different countries face these problems in unique ways. In Russia, illegal logging and hunting caused many crimes in 2018. In Indonesia, rules against slash and burn farming were not always enforced. In the United States, the EPA was founded in 1982 to help. They investigate companies that cause oil spills or dump trash. In 2023, the Justice Department took legal action against eBay. They said the site sold illegal equipment and banned chemicals. Even in Guam, a $400 million project was needed to fix sewer systems.

Many important groups are working to make things better. The International Criminal Court in The Hague decided to prosecute environmental crimes in 2016. They look at crimes that destroy the environment or take land illegally. The European Union also uses laws to protect nature. They are working on new rules to make punishments stronger. In Nigeria, special agencies work with the police to stop wildlife crime. All these efforts help protect the planet for everyone in the future.
