Islamophobia is defined as an irrational fear, hostility, or hatred directed toward the religion of Islam or Muslims. It is often characterized as a form of religious or cultural bigotry. In these instances, Muslims are frequently stereotyped as a geopolitical threat or a source of terrorism. Although Muslims represent diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds globally, Islamophobes often inaccurately portray them as a single, homogeneous racial group.

This misunderstanding leads to systemic prejudice and social exclusion.

Several historical factors have contributed to the rise of Islamophobia worldwide since the end of the Cold War. One cause is the proliferation of quasi-racialist stereotypes in Western media during the 1990s. The "war on terror" campaign, launched by the United States following the September 11 attacks, also played a significant role. Additionally, the rise of the Islamic State after the Iraq War and various terrorist attacks in the United States and Europe fueled these sentiments. Other factors include anti-Muslim rhetoric from white nationalist organizations on the internet and the radicalization of far-right groups in the United States and the European Union.

The term itself has a complex history and various linguistic forms. While the term "Islamophobia" appeared in a 1910 thesis to describe prejudice in Western civilization, it did not enter widespread English use until the 1990s. This was largely due to the work of the Runnymede Foundation. In the Muslim world, the term is translated as "ruhāb al-islām," which literally means a phobia of Islam. Different languages use unique terms to describe similar concepts. In Germany, the terms "Islamophobie" and "Islamfeindlichkeit" are used. In Scandinavia, the word "Muslimhat" literally means hatred of Muslims.

Scholars and activists use many different terms to describe these negative attitudes. Some use "anti-Muslimism," "Muslimophobia," or "anti-Islamism." Others use terms like "anti-mosque," "anti-Shiites," "anti-Sufism," or "anti-Sunni" to describe specific types of religious intolerance. Some researchers even describe the phenomenon as "Muslimophobia" when the discrimination focuses specifically on religious affiliation. There is also a debate regarding the term's definition. Some critics suggest using "anti-Muslim" to avoid confusion with religious criticism. However, many experts argue that such suggestions are attempts to deny the reality of Islamophobia.

There is significant academic debate regarding the relationship between Islamophobia and racism. Many scholars assert that Islamophobia has explicit racist dimensions because of the racialized nature of the discrimination. Some argue it is a continuation of anti-Asian, anti-Turkic, and anti-Arab racism. Others compare modern Islamophobia to the antisemitism seen in the 1930s. However, some academics, such as Jocelyne Cesari, note that researchers are still debating how Islamophobia differs from other terms like racism or anti-Semitism. This discussion is central to understanding how social hierarchies and power structures function.

The impact of Islamophobia can be measured through social studies and specific vulnerabilities. A 2013 study revealed that Muslim women are more vulnerable to Islamophobic attacks than Muslim men. This vulnerability is especially high for those wearing headscarves or face veils. Some professors of religion, such as Peter Gottschalk and Gabriel Greenberg, argue that Islamophobia is a "social anxiety" rather than just an individual psychological phobia. It functions as a social stigma that affects how entire communities are treated within a society. This social dimension helps explain why the prejudice can be so widespread and deeply rooted.

Global efforts have been made to address and combat this issue through international policy. On March 15, 2022, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution by consensus. This resolution was introduced by Pakistan on behalf of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. It officially proclaimed March 15 as the "International Day To Combat Islamophobia." This move represents a formal global recognition of the need to address prejudice and discrimination. By establishing such a day, the international community seeks to promote understanding and protect the rights of Muslim populations worldwide.
