Religious violence is a complex phenomenon involving conflict where religion is either the target or the perpetrator. It includes actions directed at religious institutions, specific people, sacred objects, or holy events. This type of violence can be motivated by religious precepts, texts, or doctrines. However, defining the term is difficult for many scholars. Violence itself is a broad concept that covers much more than physical harm. It can include the violation of personal freedoms, the use of passionate or angry language, and emotional outbursts like fury.

To understand the mechanism of religious violence, one must look at how different factors interact. It is rarely a simple, linear cause-and-effect relationship. Instead, religion is often just one of many contributing social and political factors. For example, many studies of religious conflict conclude that ethnic animosities are the true drivers. In these cases, religion may act as a layer on top of existing tensions. Some researchers suggest that religious ideas are often fragmented or context-dependent. This means that a person's religious values do not always lead directly to specific violent behaviors.

Scholars categorize violence into several distinct types and depths. Some define it strictly as physical injury or the shedding of blood. Others, like scholar Ralph Tanner, argue it includes the forcible interference in personal freedom. Terence Fretheim suggests that limiting the definition to "killing fields" ignores psychological destruction. He argues that violence also includes actions that demean or depersonalize other people. There is also systemic violence, such as racism or sexism, which can be part of a society's infrastructure. In religious settings, non-physical abuse is sometimes specifically called religious abuse.

The history of the concept of religion shows why this study is so complicated. Before the 1500s, the modern, compartmentalized concept of religion did not exist. People did not see religious entities as separate from worldly or national identities. The modern idea of religion as a distinct set of doctrines grew in the 17th century. This shift was driven by the Protestant Reformation and the era of global colonization. In the 19th century, Europeans applied labels like "Buddhism" and "Hinduism" to traditions in Asia. This history makes it hard to apply a single definition of religion to all cultures.

Significant research has attempted to quantify and explain these conflicts. Historian Matthew Rowley has discussed 300 different contributing causes of religious violence. He warns that oversimplifying these causes can actually jeopardize peace. Because of the complexity, it is hard to know if religion adds to or subtracts from general violence levels. Since no society has ever existed without religion, there is no way to compare them. This makes it impossible to establish a clear causal relationship between belief and behavior.

Various experts offer different theories on why these events occur. Hector Avalos suggests violence may stem from access to four scarce resources: divine knowledge, sacred space, group privilege, and salvation. Regina Schwartz argues that some monotheistic religions may foster violence through exclusivism toward outsiders. Other scholars, like Michael Jerryson, note that research often focuses too much on Abrahamic religions. He points out a pattern where some faiths are seen as causes of violence while others are seen as causes of peace. These views help deepen our understanding of how different belief systems are perceived globally.

Finally, religious violence is often connected to broader political systems and terrorism. Martha Crenshaw suggests that religion can act as a "mask" for political movements. She describes an instrumental approach, where violence is a rational calculation to reach a political goal. Another approach looks at the organizational structure of religious communities. In this view, leaders might act as political figureheads. A third approach sees violence as a result of community dynamics. In these cases, religious interpretations are used to justify acts that inspire emotional reactions in others.
