Crime prevention

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Crime prevention is a way to stop bad things from happening before they start. It uses many different plans to reduce the risk of crime. Some plans look at people and their families. Other plans look at the places where people live. Experts say it is better to prevent crime than to punish it later. This is often cheaper for a country. It also helps society stay much more stable.

To make a crime happen, a few things usually need to exist. First, a person must have the desire to break a rule. Second, they need the right tools or skills. Third, they must have an actual opportunity to do it. Experts use different levels to stop these things. Primary prevention helps people at the family or school level. Secondary prevention helps young people who might be at risk. Tertiary prevention happens after a crime to stop it from repeating.

Many groups study how to make the world safer. The World Health Organization and the United Nations work on this. In 2004, the World Health Organization shared nine ways to stop violence. These include making national plans and collecting better data. They also suggest making sure laws protect human rights. Many experts believe local towns are the best at organizing these plans. They say schools and jobs must work together with the police.

One special way to stop crime is called situational crime prevention. This was first described in a 1976 report by the British Home Office. It focuses on the setting rather than the person. It tries to make crime harder, riskier, or less rewarding. For example, bright street lights make it harder to hide. In Philadelphia, cameras used for traffic enforcement helped a lot. Some dangerous intersections saw a 96% drop in red light violations.

Today, these ideas also work for computers and the internet. This is used to fight cybercrime from hackers. People use firewalls and passwords to make digital theft harder. These tools increase the effort a hacker must use. They also make it more likely that the hacker will be caught. This is very important because many businesses rely on digital data. By changing the digital environment, we can keep our information much safer.
