A criminal investigation is a way to find facts.

These facts help during criminal trials in court. Investigators use an applied science to do this work. They might search a location or conduct interviews. They also use interrogation to gather more information. Collecting and keeping evidence is a very important part. Modern investigators often use forensic science to help them.

This science uses many modern techniques to solve cases.

This work is actually a very ancient science. It may have roots in the Code of Hammurabi. In that code, people could present their own evidence. This applied to both the accuser and the accused. Later, the English constable became a professional investigator. Around 1250 CE, constables had a specific job. They were told to record matters of fact. They were not supposed to judge the law.

Today, government police forces do most of this work. People also hire private investigators to help out.

Investigators often use three special indicators called MMO. This helps them find potential suspects. The first part is means, which involves tools. It also includes a person's physical capabilities. The second part is motive, or a reason. This might be for money or revenge. The third part is opportunity, or being there. This means being at the crime scene during the crime.

If someone has an alibi, they might be cleared.

Sometimes, investigators must decide which crimes are most important. This is hard when they have limited budgets. Some experts worry about how they choose priorities. They look at the demographics of certain crimes. For example, more women joined terror groups recently. This changed the priority of those investigations. Some criminologists worry that profiling can hide real crimes. They think investigators might ignore certain types of complaints. This happens if they think a group is unlikely to commit a crime.

There are many ideas to fix these problems. Some people want to hire more police officers. Others suggest using randomized priorities for suspects. This could help find criminals who are currently unsuspected. Randomizing might also save money for the police. Those savings could go toward technical evidence or tracking. This would help investigators find people who are hiding. It might also help them handle more complaints.
